Learning Objectives

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has come a long way since the colonial days to help ensure the safety and security of Singapore. The peace and low crime rate of today are not here by chance and should not be taken for granted. Singapore had her era of public disorder and rampant crime situation. SPF, by working in partnership with the community, has a vision to make Singapore a safe and secure home for everyone regardless of race and nationality.

Through this learning journey, SPF will share with the pupils the humble beginnings of SPF in a volatile and crime-infested society. And, how through careful visioning, planning and working closely with the community, a modern, clean, impartial and operationally ready SPF emerges. Such understandings of the past and SPFs role in nation building are important for the pupils to treasure the present and be ready for the future.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) is one of the Home Team agencies under the Ministry of Home Affairs. SPFs mission is to uphold the law, maintain order and keep the peace in Singapore. It has effectively and efficiently worked in partnership with the community to protect life and property, prevent crimes and disorder, detect and apprehend offenders and preserve a sense of security.

In order for our officers to discharge their duties well, the SPF provides training to its recruits to prepare them for their career as a law enforcer. This is done at the Police Academy, where recruits are trained and tested on their cognitive abilities, physical endurance and policing capabilities. All these training are geared towards equipping our officers with the skills and capabilities to deliver excellent service to the public.

Equipped with the state-of-the-art technologies, SPF has successfully managed various major incidents (eg. Terrorism aboard Laju). Despite the relatively peaceful times we are in, SPF has in its arsenal the Police Task Force and Light Strike Force to be deployed speedily in times of turmoil and unrest. Special Operations Command was formed with the specific task of containing civil unrest situations and prevent riots from escalating to uncontrollable proportions.

Special Operations Command has grown in strength and over the decades enhanced its operational capabilities and has become a formidable and daunting force. Its mere presence strikes fear in would-be criminals and troublemakers.

SPF has kept crime rates on the decline for 9 years running. Such an achievement, however, would not have been possible without working in partnership with the community and the introduction of the NPP Neighbourhood Police Post) system in the 80s. A partnership of trust is a key element in addressing the concerns of our neighbourhoods.

As a forward-looking organisation, SPF has now embarked on its next major milestone in policing to better prepare for the next millennium the NPC (Neighbourhood Police Centre) system and CSSP (Community Safety and Security Programme). Besides this, SPF is also continually updating its technological systems to enhance its operational capabilities.

Needless to say, the professionalism and dedication of our officers have helped turn Singapore into one of the safest cities in the world. The Singapore Police Force remembers the past and plans for the future.
