Learning Objectives
Public transportation in Singapore has come a long way. It has evolved from rickshaws to buses and taxis to a world-class Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system. Since 1987, the MRT has kept Singaporeans moving in more ways than one. From the city centre to satellite towns, housing estates to industrial parks, travelling around Singapore has never been easier.

Convenient, safe and reliable, the MRT has helped to make
Singapore one of the most liveable cities in the world and as part of the country's excellent infrastructure, has contributed significantly to the wealth and prosperity of the nation. The MRT has become a national pride for many Singaporeans.

SMRT Corporation is one of the operators of
Singapore's MRT system. With its proven track record of safety, efficiency and reliability, SMRT has established itself as one of the most reputable rail operators in the world.

A visit to the SMRT will give students the opportunity to learn about
Singapore's transport system and its developments. Specifically, it will provide a platform for students to have a better understanding of how the MRT system is operated and to experience first-hand the complex "behind the scene" works that go into making each commuter's ride a safe and comfortable one.

Students from the primary level will also learn about safety when using the MRT.

SMRT's core business is the operation of the MRT System. It also operates the Bukit Panjang LRT System and an executive bus and night bus service, provides a stored value farecard ticketing service (which is jointly owned with two other major public transport operators), and provides specialist engineering consultancy services.

The MRT System links major public housing developments with principal business and commercial districts, main shopping and tourist areas and major industrial estates. It comprises 89.4 route kilometres of double track, 51 stations and 3 depots.

SMRT's mission is to provide mass rapid transit passenger service along major high density travel corridors in
Singapore in order to satisfy the needs of the travelling public for a safe, reliable and user-friendly MRT system at competitive fares.
