Learning Objectives
SBS Transit is one of the leading bus operators in this part of the world and started rail operations in 2003. It was formed in 1973 through the merger of three private bus companies and listed on the then Stock Exchange of Singapore SES) in 1978. Singapore Bus Services Limited changed its name to SBS Transit Ltd in November 2001 to reflect its multi-modal status as a bus and rail operator.

In 2003, SBS Transit commenced its operations of the Sengkang LRT and the North East Line.

Through this visit, it is hoped that students will appreciate SBS Transits operating environment and more broadly, gain an understanding of the significance of SBS Transits role.

SBS Transit aims to provide world-class public transport services which is safe, comfortable, affordable, reliable and friendly. Today, SBS Transit operates about 217 services with more than 2,700 buses daily. The buses serve 16 interchanges, 16 bus terminals and more than 3,000 bus stops. Our buses have evolved drastically since the 1970s. Back then air-con buses, Superbuses, TV Mobile, Ez-link card system are virtually unheard of. Now, SBS Transit also runs the Sengkang and Punggol LRT system with 17 stations currently in operation.

In June 2003, SBS Transit began operations of the North East Line (NEL). NEL is a highly advanced fully automated underground heavy rail system the worlds first that sets new engineering and technological benchmarks in mass transit systems. Built at a cost of $5 billion, NEL is 20 km long and comprises 16 stations covering Punggol to HarbourFront.

Sharing equal significance to its technological achievement is the NELs contribution to promoting art and culture and bringing it closer to the people. Unique to the system is the works of 19 distinguished local artists who have custom crafted signature art pieces for each station.
