The core function of the Singapore Prison Service is to protect society through the safe custody and rehabilitation of offenders. In addition to this, it also plays an important role in crime prevention by providing important information on crime to law enforcement agencies and by arranging for visits to the prisons by youths-at-risk.
The Prison Service also works closely with other organisations to help ex-inmates re-integrate into society after their release from prison. The vision of the Prison Service is to help steer offenders towards being responsible members of our society. We believe that this the real long-term protection of society.

A visit to the Prison Service will allow students to see first-hand the spartan but humane conditions of our prisons. They will appreciate that public safety is constantly ensured through the tight security and smooth operation of our prisons. The students will also have an opportunity to see inmates participating in rehabilitation programmes, e.g. inmates having lessons, learning a trade in the workshops and participating in religious classes. Perhaps the most memorable of all, the students will have an opportunity to interact personally with our prison officers. Through such interaction, they will hopefully be inspired by the commitment of our officers to make a difference in the lives of the inmates under their charge.
The Prison Service recognises that it cannot succeed in its efforts to rehabilitate inmates without the help of the community. We therefore welcome young Singaporeans to visit us so that they can better understand the role we play and what the community can do to help rebuild the lives of offenders.
