Learning Objectives
The visits to the agrotechnology parks will convey in a concrete and interesting manner various messages to our pupils.

First, because of our land constraints, we have to apply technology to our agricultural pursuits in order to maximise land usage.

Second, even though we are reliant on other countries for food supply, we make sure that we have some ability to supply some of our own demand. Possessing this ability is psychologically reassuring to Singaporeans and is especially important in the event that foreign food supply is not available.

Third, the farms illustrate Singapores commitment to excellence as some of their produce are able to carve a niche in the world market despite the farms relative smallness compared to those in other countries.

Learning Site
The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) is responsible for ensuring food safety, safeguarding the health of animals and plants as well as facilitating agri-trade for Singapore.

AVA has been a participant of MOEs Learning Journeys programme since 2003. To give students an insight into AVAs work, we have developed a series of tours tailored for various levels from primary to tertiary level.

Here is a snapshot of the programmes we have in place.

Programmes for Primary Students

Visit to Agrotechnology Parks
Agrotechnology is the application of modern science and technology to large-scale intensive farming system so as to maximise land use and increase productivity.

There are currently 6 Agrotechnology Parks spreading some 1,500 hectares and housing 230 farms, including layer farms for egg production, freshwater fish farms, goat and cattle farms, orchid and ornamental plant farms and ornamental fish farms.
Students have a choice of two programmes to the Agrotechnology Parks with visits to a vegetable, ornamental fish, orchid, goat, aeroponics and ornamental plant farm (3 farms per programme).

Through visits to the Agrotechnology Parks, we hope to give students an insight into our vibrant ornamental fish and plant industries as well as how modern intensive farms have contributed towards producing a measure of Singapores fresh food supply.

Visit to Centre for Animal Welfare & Control (CAWC)
As a champion for animal welfare, AVA has been actively promoting responsible pet ownership through its Responsible Pet Ownership Public Education Programme to equip existing and potential owners with knowledge on the care and responsibility that comes with owning a pet.

We hope that visits to our Centre for Animal Welfare & Control (CAWC) can help inculcate in students a sense of responsibility towards the welfare of animals and to curb problems such as pet abandonment.

At CAWC, students will get to attend a talk on Responsible Pet Ownership, have a tour of our Poster Gallery as well as get a hands-on experience, handling small pets such as hamsters and rabbits.

Programmes for Secondary & Tertiary Students

Visit to Veterinary Public Health Centre (VPHC)
The Veterinary Public Health Centre (VPHC) is the cornerstone of AVAs integrated food safety programme and houses 8 specialised laboratories including Microbiology Lab, Pesticides Residues Lab, Food Quality and Authentication Lab and Toxins Lab.

When students visit the VPHC, they learn about the importance of food safety, food safety risks and good food safety practices. Students can expect to tour 3 of our labs, talk to the experts and learn how these labs.

Visit to Marine Aquaculture Centre (MAC)

AVA’s Marine Aquaculture Centre (MAC), located at St. John’s Island, was set up to develop technology for marine foodfish production and facilitate development of commercial aquaculture and related activities in Singapore and the region.

Students can expect stops at the Rotifers Room (rotifers are live food micro-organisms used to feed fish larvae), Laviculture Room (where fish larvae are kept from day 1 to weaning age) and Fish Spawning Room (a place where parent stocks are kept for breeding). Through this programme, students get to learn about the R&D efforts and techniques that come into play to enable large-scale fish breeding and rearing to increase the production of food fish.

Visit to Animal & Plant Health Centre (APHC)
The Animal and Plant Health Centre ((APHC) provides vital laboratory support for AVA’s monitoring and surveillance programmes.

This centre offers diagnostic, testing and consultation services on animal and plant health to the public and houses the national reference laboratories for diseases of animals, birds, fish and plants.

Students will get to tour 3 of our labs at APHC, interact with our professional team and learn how APHC’s diagnostic and testing services help AVA preserve
Singapore
’s disease-free status.
