Learning Objectives
Pupils visiting the incineration plant would get to see for themselves the enormous amount of rubbish generated by Singaporeans. Here, pupils would also get to see how refuse is weighed and discharged mechanically, how it is incinerated and how waste gases are cleaned before being released into the environment to prevent air pollution.

Pupils would also see how heat from the combustion of refuse is used to generate electricity and how scrap metal is extracted for recycling at the mills.

From the visits, pupils would be made aware of the constraints which Singapore faces in the management of our solid wastes.

Learning Site

The Ministry of the Environment, established in 1972, is committed to improving and protecting the environment and making Singapore the best home for Singaporeans. Over the past 25 years, it has achieved high standards of cleanliness and public health and a large part of this is due to the provision of world-class solid waste disposal facilities. The following is a list of ENV's installation:

Solid Waste Disposal Facilities

  • Semakau Landfill
  • Senoko Incineration Plant
  • Tuas Incineration Plant
  • Tuas South Incineration Plant
  • Tuas Marine Transfer Station
  • Ulu Pandan Incineration

Diseases are kept in check by the modern and efficient solid waste management system we have today. There is daily collection of refuse. The refuse collected from across the island is either incinerated or deposited in landfills. Most of our refuse is incinerated because, in land-scarce Singapore, this is a more viable option than landfills as it reduces the volume of solid waste by 90%. The landfill is the final destination for our solid wastes.

It is used to dispose of incineration ash and non-incinerable waste like construction and renovation debris.
