ISTANA KAMPONG GELAM
The Istana (palace) building was built more than 160 years ago by Sultan Ali, son of Sultan Hussien Shah who signed the treaty ceding Singapore to the British. The building and the 23 hectares of land that was given by the British to Sultan Hussein and his descendents reverted to being crown property in 1897.

Today, the Istana Kampong Gelam is home to the Malay Heritage Museum, with 8 galleries showcasing the roots, history and role of the Singapore Malays in Singapores development.

DAILY CULTURAL PROGRAMME

For 40 minutes, experience the colour, grace and artistry of Malay custom and performing arts. Watch the dancers in their intricately-designed traditional costumes and the beautiful golden cembul jars. Listen to old stories of Singapore, the royal palace and the Malay people from Tok Selampit or court messenger.

Audiences will see the meaning behind the movement that governed our traditional martial arts (the silat) and the importance of the perfumed leaves called the sireh rampai.

Visitors will also get a chance to be performers in the show themselves, playing the angklung (traditional musical instrument made entirely from bamboo), playing Malay percussion, learning basic dance steps, perform simple everyday gestures, etc. More than just a show, it promises to be an experience.

FLORA
