ISTANA KAMPONG GELAM
The Istana (palace) building was built more than 160 years ago by Sultan Ali, son of Sultan Hussien Shah who signed the treaty ceding Singapore to the British. The building and the 23 hectares of land that was given by the British to Sultan Hussein and his descendents reverted to being crown property in 1897.
Today, the Istana Kampong Gelam is home to the Malay Heritage Museum, with 8 galleries showcasing the roots, history and role of the Singapore Malays in Singapores development.
