Learning Objectives

It is the mission of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to build a premier land transport system for Singapore. Singapore is a dynamic and growth-oriented cosmopolitan city with a highly mobile population. The number of daily trips by public transport has grown from 2.6 million in 1981 to 7.5 million in 1999 and this is projected to increase to 10 million in year 2010. In a land-scarce country like Singapore, it is neither possible nor sufficient to keep the people and economy on the move simply by building more roads.

The visit programme will give students an overview of the land transport policies and strategies adopted by LTA to manage the land transport system efficiently and effectively. At the end of the visit, students will gain a better understanding of how LTA is trying to solve tomorrow's transport problems today.

Learning Site

LTA has produced a corporate video to communicate to students the work done at LTA and how this contributes to keeping Singapore and its economy on the move. The video will also outline LTA's future plans, in anticipation of Singapore's growing land transport needs.

LTG, featuring the key developments and integral aspects of Singapore’s land transport system, will showcase how land transport has been in the past, how it is today and how it will be in the future. The exhibits at the LTG  will thus take the visitors through a journey of the evolution of our nation’s transport system since the colonial days, tracing its development over the past decades till modern times and what it aspires to be in the future. The LTG explains in a fun and interactive way, the developments of land transport over time and how improvements have been made possible. With interactive features, a challenge theatre and more, the LTG promises to be an interesting learning journey for all ages.

Students who opt for Programme B will visit the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) Centre, the nerve centre of all traffic monitoring controls, which will give students insight into how expressways are monitored and controlled twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Students will get to view the control centre that operates and maintains the two main systems, the Expressway Monitoring and Advisory System (EMAS) and the Green Link Determining (GLIDE) System.
